《Water from the Happiness Canal Reaches Our Village》 - Played by Chan Chung Wai
The Red Flag Canal was constructed by a massive irrigation project in the 1960s, spanning nearly a decade, by local people to resolve water shortages and drought. This colossal project stretches over 1,500 kilometers along the mountainside of Taihang Mountain in HeNan.
"Water from the Happiness Canal Reaches Our Village" is a renowned guzheng piece composed by Fan Shang'e, Xiang Sihua, and Shen Liliang in 1974 after conducting in-depth research in the region. It is now a level-nine exam piece at the Central Conservatory of Music.
The piece portrays the spectacular scenes of turbulent waters flowing through the Red Flag Canal and the lively, joyful moments when the canal was opened. It also recalls the harsh conditions and resentful feelings during times of drought. Finally, the piece depicts the beautiful scenery surrounding the canal and the people's admiration for the better life that the Red Flag Canal has brought to them.
